May 2016 Truck Sales – Both Toyota Trucks Down

For the first time in months (maybe even years), both Toyota trucks saw a sales drop as the plant closure, lack of selling days versus last year and a down market all contributed to the drop. Ford looks like the only real big winner based on volume, but their car sales were down sharply as well.

Toyota Tundra sales dropped for another month and this time the Tacoma sales dropped as well.

Overall sales were down for 7 out of the 11 truck makers/products. Many of these negative sales results were caused by being just off by a 1,000 units (Ram Truck, GMC Sierra, Tacoma) and likewise several of the gains were by around a 1k units (Colorado, Canyon).

On the surface, Ford trucks looked like they boomed during the month of May, yet looking back to May 2015, we can see their sales just returned to normal. For reference, Ford sold 68,520 units in May 2014.

The big surprise has to be the Nissan Frontier with an impressive jump of  around 2,500 units or 46 percent. Like Ford, the Frontier did well in May 2014 with sales of 6,662 units, however, unlike Ford, the Frontier posted a sales gain against those old numbers as well. One theory as to why is the Frontier sales are a byproduct of increased dealership traffic thanks to many new models offered by Nissan. They have hit the timing right it seems with recent updates on SUVs and a variety of cars. Plus, consumer interest/curiosity in the Titan is likely driving traffic.

In the end, don’t expect Toyota to make any radical changes due to these sales numbers. The TRD PRO Tacoma is still slated to hit dealers in the fall and I still expect a new Tundra to be introduced next year at the Chicago Auto Show. Until then, there won’t be much new.
